Summary[edit]
DescriptionLakeMohonkTennis.jpg | This group photo was taken next to the tennis courts at the Lake Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y. Its annual tournament (est. 1921) was underway. It's a spontaneous gathering of officials, players, and spectators. |
Date | 1924. The event ran from July 14–21. |
Source |
Original publication: Lake Mohonk Weekly Bulletin, seasonal, July 26, 1924 pp. 2–3. A handout for hotel guests that gave details on recent, current, and upcoming activities. Paul Martin is wearing a white polo shirt and standing seventh from top left. American Lawn Tennis, Aug 15, 1924 p. 370 – via HathiTrust. The couple reached the semi-finals in mixed doubles. Immediate source: from my own collection. |
Author | The photographer was not credited. It was taken next to a footbridge (far left). |
Other versions | Archived here: Panoramic. |
Other information: The names of those pictured are nearly all unknown. Three players are sitting on the grass with their rackets. One of them is singles finalist Henry Bassford (far right). That's either Daniel Smiley (1855–1930) or a look-alike, standing fifth from the top left. It's based on the distinctively white, bushy mustache and goatee beard. He was the resort's proprietor from 1912 to 30. Vintage postcard: resort towers. Wiki Commons.
