File upload blocked by filter[edit]
I am attempting to upload a mp3 file which is freely licensed (owned by the U.S. government and explicitly gives permission for unrestricted use and access, courtesy of the Reagan Presidential Library), however it is being blocked by an automated filter. What would be the best way to proceed with the upload? The file in question can be found here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/276558209, it has important historical significance as the first time a member of the Reagan administration acknowledged the existence of AIDS. Permission to use photo[edit]
How do I contact a Wikipedia commons member (Jim.henderson) for permission to use a photo by him. I have searched him talk page for an email without success. J5hbx (talk) 19:58, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Jim.henderson: For me, the "email this user" tool is available on the side when I'm on their user page. Abzeronow (talk) 20:03, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- J5hbx, see also Special:EmailUser/Jim.henderson. It should help you. RodRabelo7 (talk) 20:46, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Tried EmailUse/Jim.henderson and was denied the ability to send it. Neither do I see "email this user" on his page. I have tried as a new topic on his talk page.
- Thanks anyway. J5hbx (talk) 22:37, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- J5hbx, that's likely because Jim.henderson deactivated the option to receive email from brand-new users ("Allow emails from brand-new users") on their preferences. Yeah, contacting them on their talkpage will probably solve. Regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 22:44, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry; it's all my fault. I have my E-mail option set for my spam magnet account. Not a good idea, since undesired messages via Wikimedia are uncommon for me. I'll repair that.
- Meanwhile my three pictures of an apartment house near Mullaly Park in The Bronx are all CC0 Universal Public Domain licensed, so all can be used for any purpose without credit or further permission. Credit to "Jim.henderson via Wikimedia Commons" would be pleasant but not necessary. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:47, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Are images in the russian wikipedia CC?[edit]
I am doing a project involving some soviet historical actors, for wich portraits are available in the russian wikipedia but don't seem to appear in Wikimedia CC itself or any other wikipedia language.
I was wondering if these images should still be safe to use (in a non-commercial manner and giving credit) or if the russian wikipedia project has different standars that could explain the difference. Thank you very much for any perspective. Xandru4 (talk) 06:10, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Xandru4: Content hosted by Commons needs to comply with Commons:Licensing under US copyright law and under the copyright laws of the country of first publication (which could be Russia in this case). In addition, some local Wikipedia host fair use or non-free content that is not allowed by Commons, and Commons doesn't accept any licenses that place any type of restriction on commercial or derivative use. It will be much easier for someone to give you a less general answer if you can provide a link the files you're asking about. If they're uploaded locally to Russian Wikipedia, you can link to them from this discussion by simply adding the language^prefix ":ru:" before each file's name (for example,
[[:ru:File:Filename.Fileextension]]
) and then adding them to this discussion. If you can't get that to work just provide a link to the URL addresses for the files' pages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:47, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Xandru4: Bonjour,
Cette politique se trouve sur la page ru:Википедия:Критерии добросовестного использования.
- -- Asclepias (talk) 13:49, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
Xandru4 (talk) 20:34, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Xandru4: Per m:nfc, Russian Wikipedia hosts non-free content like English Wikipedia does, subject to ru:ВП:КДИ. It is uploadable by administrators, uploaders, eliminators, and file movers. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:56, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
Identical images[edit]
File:South Jeolla map.png and File:Karte sued-jeolla.png are identical- I believe Commons would say that the more recent of these two should be deleted, right? Thanks for any guidance. I plan to request deletion of File:Karte sued-jeolla.png on this basis. Geographyinitiative (talk) 22:13, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- They are not completely identical, one is the original 2003 version with a white background, the other is a modified 2021 version with a transparent background. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:27, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias, i guess you didn't see another image Karte used jeolla.png.--KEmel49 (talk) 04:44, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- That last link is broken, and would not be a valid Wikimedia URL. The link appears to be intended to go to File:Karte sued-jeolla.png (already linked above), but for some odd reason KEmel49 captioned it "Karte used jeolla.png". I don't see how that can do anything but add confusion to the discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 08:03, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Help replacing the lead image (resolved)[edit]
Hi, the page Category:Reinhard_Heydrich uses an image colorised by an amateur as a lead image: File:Bundesarchiv Bild 146-1969-054-16, Reinhard Heydrich Recolored.jpg. Please help replacing it with the authentic Bundesarchive image such as File:Bundesarchiv Bild 146-1969-054-16, Reinhard Heydrich.jpg. Thank you. --K.e.coffman (talk) 07:29, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- @K.e.coffman: It looks like you already fixed this yourself (by this edit). Please, in the future, if you fix a problem you found and mentioned here, come back here and say so yourself, so that you don't waste someone else's time trying to follow up and help you. - Jmabel ! talk 08:11, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, I was not sure that these were related to Wikidata. I'm still seeing the 'recolored' image in the category's infobox; it's the same in another browser so it does not seem to be a cache issue. Or does it take some time for the Wikidata change to manifest itself in Commons? --K.e.coffman (talk) 08:29, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- @K.e.coffman: Hi, Yes, the update of the display can take some time. It is possible to simply wait until it updates. A null edit on the category page may speed up its update there. Which I just did. The displayed image changed for me. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:35, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: thank you -- I'm seeing the updated image now. --K.e.coffman (talk) 12:48, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- @K.e.coffman: For the future: after making the change in Wikidata, you can add "?action=purge" to the URL, then enter that modified URL to request a purge. Works at least 99% of the time. - Jmabel ! talk 15:33, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Using the "Articles near me"[edit]
I need help to understand how commons treats this Articles near me feature that the Wikimedia Map have on several pages, including this category page for city Wikimedia commons - Tromsø
- Opening the page
- button to enlarge map.
- Find the area to search within, for "Articles in this area"
- Click the button, and…nothing happens!?
I have checked on beforehand, that there would be thing, buildings, landmarks and streets in the citycentre depicted through pictures, articles etc. These do not show up on street map as expected. WHY
thank you for reading this request - Mathias -Ahoy (talk) 09:41, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- Not sure what you mean. We are on commons here, not on Wikimedia map. Is the articles near me a gadget? Paradise Chronicle (talk) 09:17, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Paradise Chronicle: The editor Mathias -Ahoy is referring to the "Show nearby articles" feature of the enlarged version of maps provided by mw:Help:Extension:Kartographer, accessible from Commons categories which have locations in their {{Wikidata Infobox}}. The problem seen by this editor comes from the meaning of "articles" (i.e. the default namespace, which on Commons are called "Galleries"). In this case the feature is working correctly because while Commons has many files and categories near to Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum in Tromsø, Commons doesn't have any Galleries with locations close to Tromsø (Commons does have a Gallery for Tromsø at Tromsø, but it doesn't have a location). Mathias -Ahoy, as an example that shows what I am describing, try zooming the map on the category Category:Eiffel Tower and then clicking "Show nearby articles". You will see nearby Commons galleries, including Tour Eiffel, Les Invalides, and Hôtel du ministre des Affaires étrangères. Note that these are not categories or files, they are in the default namespace, which on the Wikipedias are "Articles" but on Commons are "Galleries". —RP88 (talk) 09:50, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Charlie Kirk Photo[edit]
A user has marked the deletion request on my picture of File:Charlie Kirk April 2024.jpg under (CSD F10) which states: "Low-to-medium quality selfies and other personal images of or by users who have no constructive global contributions." But the thing is that it is a picture of Charlie Kirk that I took of him, not a picture of myself. I also don't understand how I do not have global contributions. You can check my global contribution across multiple wikis. Shoot for the Stars (talk) 22:24, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- I have reverted both speedy deletion tags. The photo is in use, and has EXIF data. No hits on TinEye. Abzeronow (talk) 22:46, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- The user in question has also made other really bad speedy nominations wrongly invoking F10 for files of regular contributors, e.g. [1]. Or requesting deletions with the no permission tag when there's no obvious reason, e.g. [2]. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:50, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
Trying to upload picture of MY OWN collection personally signed bills by Mary Ellen Withrow[edit]
Hello I took pictures of my own collection collector signed bills by treasure Mary Ellen Withrow. I own the bills and I took the pictures myself and keep getting copyright errors. These are ultra low number serial bills with the same numbers, already high value but also courtesy signed by Mary Ellen Withrow. Her signature is public domain. They are in a treasury holder with her favorite quote Yesterday is a canceled check. Tomorrow is a promissory note, but today is cash. I think it adds intrinsic value to her wiki. But have tried many times to add it. MoonwHale1 (talk) 00:16, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi MoonwHale1. It's not clear whether you're having problems uploading files to Commons or whether you having problems adding files to some Wikipedia article. If you're having problems uploading files to Commons, then perhaps you can provide some more information for reference. Have you already posted this pictures somewhere else online? Generally, when you take a picture of something created by something else, the copyright status of whatever your photographing also needs to be considered in addition to the copyright of the picture you yourself has taken. If by "bills" you mean currency, then you might want to take a look at COM:Currency because copyright laws can differ from country to country when it comes to currency. Owning the bills yourself doesn't necessarily mean they're no longer under copyright protection, and Commons can only host images of the bills if they no longer or never have been under copyright protection, or they've been released by their copyright holder under an acceptable free license. If, however, you mean something else by "bills", then please clarify. Now, if you're having problems adding files to a Wikipedia article, you're going to need to discuss that on the article's corresponding talk page because that's not really something related to Commmons per se. Commons is mainly concerned with the licensing of the content it hosts, but the inclusion of such content in articles (i.e. the encyclopedic relevance of the content to the article's subject) is left up to each Wikipedia to decide. Even if the content is fine from a copyright standpoint, you might still need to establish a consensus for its inclusion in the article from an ecyclopedic standpoint. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:50, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- Also, it would help a lot to say exactly what upload tool (URL or name of app) you are using, and exactly what error message you are getting. - Jmabel ! talk 05:54, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
- @MoonwHale1: you triggered an automated warning by trying to upload small resolution files as a new user. This filter is not capable of any complicated decisions. If these are USD bills then uploading the images should be OK: Commons:Currency#United_States_of_America. Try to upload the images using Special:UploadWizard. MKFI (talk) 06:14, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

--Rosenzweig τ 11:57, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

- Sure, one simple way is to create your user page User:Abby Imani and place a normal web link to your website there, possibly with some text about you. Thus, if the "author" field of your photos link to your user page, as it normally does by default, viewers can easily go to your website in two clicks. Or you can link your name from the "author" field of the photos directly to your website instead of linking to your user page. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:05, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

- It should be on the right of the History tab on the file (it might be slightly different if you use the latest Vector skin which I do not). Abzeronow (talk) 17:40, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- I am using the Vector 2022 skin and with me it's in the drop down menu of "More" to the right of the history button of the toolbar. You can find more information on moving here

User talk:Keksikeke[edit]
Hello, all those pictures are uploaded by me ( my user name is keksikeke) and they are pictures of me. I am singer, songwriter. I have pay all those pictures and I own copyright for them. so there should not be any problem. Maybe " Estopedist1" want to make some harm for me? Am I right? Here are my artist links so You can see I am real person and real singer & songwriter and my songs really are played in finnish radio stations so that wikipedia has for example used by radio persons in their speaks when my music is played on the radio. So my pictures are mine and they are free to use when It is about my music and so on...
Wikipedia: fi:Antti Kuosmanen (muusikko)
Sincerely, Antti Kuosmanen Keksikeke (talk) 16:37, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- This is obviously false: EXIF in File:Antti Kuosmanen.jpg says Author Jussi Eerola, Copyright holder: Jussi Eerola. Yann (talk) 16:44, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- EXIF can be wrong. Nonetheless, User:Keksikeke would be advised to follow the process at Com:VRT (or to ask the photographer to) to explain the back ground. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:58, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
Upload school paper from 1948 to Hannibal Wisconsin wiki page.[edit]
I have a hardcopy paper from a grade school class from 1948 to include on the Hannibal Wisconsin page. I found the paper at my parents house. Two of my aunts are listed in the list of authors within the paper. I'd like to upload it the the Hannibal Wisconsin page, but I'm running into issues with copyright, as well as, pdf files not being acceptable any longer. There is no way at this point to get permission from anyone involved since, most likely, they have all passed away by now. GLDay (talk) 21:00, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- Two things that I think matter here. Firstly, you wouldn't own the copyright to the paper since it was written by your aunts. So it makes sense you'd be having issues with that. Second, and more importantly IMO, grade school papers aren't in scope for Commons anyway. Let alone allowable in Wikipedia articles. At least I don't think they are. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong on that, but it doesn't really matter because of the copyright issues anyway. --Adamant1 (talk) 21:25, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- Might be in scope, hard to say without looking.
- U.S. in that era => something like this was almost certainly not copyrighted and absolutely certainly such a copyright would not have been renewed, so it's PD.
- People dying actually does not affect the copyright deeply. If no one is named specifically for intellectual property rights in a will, those rights pass on with the residue of the estate.
- If everyone from a grade school in 1948 is dead, that is rather unfortunate. If alive, they'd presumably be in their 80s. - Jmabel ! talk 02:01, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- My bad. I forgot about the probable lack of a copyright notice. --Adamant1 (talk) 02:04, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
Yahoo! Labs logo[edit]
It it possible to upload the Yahoo Labs logo to the Commons? I am unsure about if this would be appropriate or not because Yahoo Labs is discontinued. Thank you! K.O.518 (talk) 01:14, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- @K.O.518: It really depends on which logo your talking about, it's the logo on their Twitter account then it's probably fine due to being below the threshold of originality. There's already a bunch of other one's like it on here in Category:Yahoo! logos. --Adamant1 (talk) 01:26, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, ok thank you! K.O.518 (talk) 01:42, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
Processed Screenshot from Google Maps[edit]
The following image File:Lageplan des Klosters Sainte-Marie de la Tourette.jpg was part of my lecture note at the FH Cologne in 1995. It is an adapted and transformed screenshot from Google Maps and has been requested for deletion. I know that Google Maps is the source but not the author. Authors are aerial photographic firms as subcontractors which are unknown. Is the additional information, which I added sufficient for a Wikimedia Commons use? Peter Christian Riemann (talk) 10:40, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Peter Christian Riemann: Hi,
- No amount of information will change the fact that this is a derivative work of a map copyrighted by Google. You would need the permission from Google to publish it under a free license, which you obviously wouldn't get. Yann (talk) 10:58, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks I was afraid of this outcome, so the image has to be deleted. Peter Christian Riemann (talk) 12:04, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- Google Maps was launched in February 2005. If you used that photograph in 1995, it cannot be from Google Maps. What is the actual source? --Rosenzweig τ 10:59, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

Remove background from images[edit]
Hello everyone, recently I uploaded six images of statues:
- File:Nijverheid van Eindhoven, De Handel.jpg
- File:Nijverheid van Eindhoven, Het Jonge Bloeiende Eindhoven.jpg
- File:Nijverheid van Eindhoven, Het Verkeer.jpg
- File:Nijverheid van Eindhoven, De Tabak.jpg
- File:Nijverheid van Eindhoven, De Textiel.jpg
- File:Nijverheid van Eindhoven, Het Geluid.jpg
In the background you can clearly see wires of the railroad behind them. My question is if someone could remove these wires and then also make the background transparent. I have tried it with several free tools on the internet, but either it doesn't work or the quality is lost. I would like the images to be uploaded as new versions of the files. So not as new files, but as replacements (jpg format). I would be happy to hear if anyone would like to do this for me! Kind regards, S. Perquin (talk) 17:55, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

Licenza Commons[edit]
Amerighi (talk) 11:34, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
Good morning, I wanted to know if I can publish an image on Wikimedia with this license: CC-BY 4.0 example: [4]
Thank you- @Roberto.Amerighi: Ciao e benvenuto. Sì, consulta {{Cc-by-4.0}}.
- Hi, and welcome. Yes, please see {{Cc-by-4.0}}. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:51, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Roberto.Amerighi: Hi, No, you cannot take the personal initiative to issue a license CC-BY 4.0 on a photo like the photo in your example, which is tagged with "BCS", not with CC-BY 4.0. Note that the CC-BY 4.0 in the description page is for the metadata, not the photo. The pictured object is in the public domain. The photo is probably in the public domain in Italy. However, it might be possible to upload the photo to Commons if the photo can be determined to be in the public domain in the United States. It may be the case or not. The photo might be in the public domain or it might be non-free, but it is not CC-BY 4.0 because CC-BY 4.0 is explicitly excluded by the website for such photos. The problem with that source website is that it does not specify the initial origins of the photos, the photographers and who owns or owned the international copyrights. It is a complex situation. There is an ongoing discussion about it on this page. I suggest to wait until that discussion gets closed one way or the other and then act accordingly. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:56, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: Sorry, I was misled by the metadata license. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:56, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
Photos of politicians[edit]

Maria Montez image[edit]
Hey, I found an image of Maria Montez linked to wikimedia and I wanted to know if I were to use it for my clothing brand, would I have any legal issues to worry a about? 74.103.239.217 06:46, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
- Possibly. If you would link to the file page of the particular image, it is a lot more likely that someone could give you a good answer. - Jmabel ! talk 07:02, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
- We are (mostly) not lawyers, and cannot give legal advice. If the image is on Commons, it is probably OK from a copyright point of view, but there are still copyright and personality rights to consider. Please consult a lawyer qualified in the jurisdiction in which you operate. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:48, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Do I need to get permission?[edit]
I want to upload a picture from the following website: [5]https://jasminesherman.com/download-share/
On the website, it tells people to “download and share these images”. Do I still have to get permission from Ms. Sherman? LordBirdWord (talk) 20:22, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- @LordBirdWord: That's not an open licence (It doesn't allow images to be modified, for instance), so overall, yes, you would need to get permission, in the form of an open licence.
- That said, some of the images are derivatives of other copyright material, so are unlikely ever to be openly licensed. Others may not meet the threshold of originality, so are not subject to copyright.
- We'd need to know exactly which image you have in mind, before we can advise further. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:40, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

- Please don't ever tell people on the Internet your password, everyone can read this page! It doesn't look like a password though, more like an IP address. If you want to change your password, there is a link Preferences, at the very top of the page. This will lead you to your preferences page which has a "Change password" button. --rimshottalk 21:27, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

- 2. On top of the page, click preferences. In it, it should say “change password”. LordBirdWord (talk) 21:45, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

- This is not Wikipedia, but Wikimedia Commons, where we don't write biographies, but we host media files that can be used elsewhere. If you need help with Wikipedia in English, you can ask questions here: w:en:WP:TEAHOUSE. If you are looking to write about yourself, I strongly recommend that you see w:en:WP:COI and w:en:WP:NOTABLE. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 01:33, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- Not to mention en:Wikipedia:Autobiography, the nutshell description of which is, "Avoid writing or editing an article about yourself (or paying someone else to do so), other than to correct unambiguous errors of fact." Adding location info from EXIF data[edit]
Hello! How do I call a bot like DschwenBot to add location data contained within the EXIF data of a photograph I have uploaded? It'd be a bit more convenient if I could call a bot to add this data. Thank you for your help! Albeit simple (talk) 04:13, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Albeit simple: Hello,
- DschwenBot is not in activity anymore, apparently because of some technical requirement of Wikimedia.
- When that bot was in activity, it was called by the insertion of the template GPS EXIF in the description page of the file.
- If there are no geographical coordinates in the EXIF data of the photos, they cannot be added from there.
- If photos have geographical coordinates in their EXIF data and if the tool Upload Wizard is used for uploading them, the location templates are added automatically when the files are uploaded.
- If you have the coordinates, you could add the location template manually.

- @Emiseo: It would help a lot to say what country you are based in and to point to a page that contains the relevant logo so we can see what we are talking about. Copyright issues vary from country to country, and depend on how simple or complex the logo is, so it's much more efficient to talk about a specific case. - Jmabel ! talk 22:56, 30 April 2024 (UTC)

Copyrighted flags?[edit]
Hello. I imagine the two flags at the second picture here [8] are copyrighted. The flags (they're actually the two sides of one) were adopted in 1892. However this digital drawing is obviously not from then. The flags I think do pass the threshold of originality from my own judgement. According to the picture the source of the flags would be this 1995 book [9] but the organization represented by the flag does not seem to be mentioned in the book. The organization is the Macedo-Romanian Cultural Society, a private cultural organization in Romania that does not belong to the state. I just created an article for it in English Wikipedia and want to use the flags. Should I upload them here or there per fair use? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 22:21, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- The only thing there that I can really imagine having copyright is the branches (mlădițe). Romulus & Remus are almost certainly a copy of something much older; the tricolor certainly can't be copyrighted, and I doubt the arrangement can be. @Super Dromaeosaurus: I take i you disagree, though. Can you say why? - ~
